Act 2 Scene 5: No 26 'Cabaret'
This scene shows Cliff and Sally in the Kit Kat Klub within the presents of Nazis, Cliff is trying to persuade Sally to move with him back to England, that she need to stop sleeping around and realises her dreams of becoming an actress are over. This makes sally very angry and runs off ready to perform, in the mean time Ernst is persuading cliff to do another errand for him for good money but cliff is refusing as he is against the Nazi party and Ernst supports them understanding this errand is to do with them. Cliff is then dragged out the club and beaten up by the Nazis and Sally begins to perform the iconic song 'Cabaret'.
The scene ‘cabaret’ is an
iconic scene from the script and within many of the remakes. This scene particularly resonates with me as I feel I wanted
to look at the stage makeup side to Sally and the exaggerated look she portrays when performing, but further how as a designer i can tell the whole story of sally's journey to this point through the hair, makeup and styling.
At the start of the script all the stage scene’s portrayed are very exciting, enchanting and desirable, pulling you into the bright shinny light of 1930's Berlin but in this scene even though its a performance at the same club to the same audience it means so much more. It explores the sugar coating of the show girls life in relation to the changing situation in berlin within the political status of the Nazis. The scene shows the underside of this enchanting world were sally performs. Within this scene i feel Sally uses the song as a way of escaping her struggles and is the core of what the whole story is about.
