Evaluation

Looking back to the beginning of the project I didn't know much if anything about Berlin in the 20's and 30's and Cabaret, through my development and research I have really enjoyed and immersed my self into Weimar Berlin, The Goodbye to Berlin book and of course Cabaret script. I have researched in depth Weimar Berlin culture and ways of these outrageous extrovert characters through historical research of Berlin during the 20’s, real characters around at this time and of course inspiration from Christopher Isherwood’s book. I feel that my design shows an in depth portrayal of a historical version of Sally Bowels as a Character from Cabaret and a in depth strong development process using research, in class tutorials, many varied sources and my own development creative process shown throughout my blog and within my final images creating a successful characterization. I was pleased with my partner’s technical ability’s carrying out my design although there were some area’s I feel that could have been improved such as the hair neatness I am very happy with my final images. I enjoyed creating my partners design and feel that with little direction on the hair design I created a style that I was very pleased with I feel that this was my strong point within my own assessment. I feel that technical lessons could have been more in depth to aid us in creating 1920’s historical looks such as, covering of the brows, brow shapes and lip shapes this was something I feel effected my final images.

Transitioning into Contemporary club culture inspired charactisation of my chosen character the Emcee from Cabaret is were I began to become more creatively involved, Club kids icons such as Leigh Bowery and Michael Algi Photographers Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin inspired my final designs aimed to reveal this flamboyant, extrovert and androgynous charactisation further influenced by my own experience living among these club kids in the streets of London. Not only did my final contemporary designs hold many inspirations from club kids culture it was my way of creating a New Berliner the hair inspired from the 20’s and styling creatively influenced from Cabaret I feel I portrayed a contemporary Emcee keeping with the extrovert ways of Weimar Berlin but moving the look in the modern world. I was pleased with my final images particularly my creative photo-shoot when experimenting with the final images, I feel the video portrays my vision supported through research both historical and current. Although I do feel that some areas of my Contempory design could be developed such as the tightness within the hair I feel that the overall look is successful.

I have enjoyed this semester although I do feel that my creative process was stronger towards the end I feel I have achieved some successful outcomes. I feel that next term I want to experiment more with my creative process and play more within my own time something I feel I was previously restricting myself with.

 

Emcee Experiments with Final Images

I wanted to experiment using the images from my final shoot and create a video inspired by my experiences in London night life i.e. club culture i wanted to explore the idea of distorting the images such as when your in a club an image projecting 3 time over due to the lights and drink. I began exploring ways i could do this with the materials i had i began using the images on my laptop and pressing back and forth this created a cool effect like the model was moving i added music in the back ground and using my iPhone created the video below.

I love initial effect of this and began pausing the video to parts were the images overlapped creating the distorted effect i wanted i then took screen shots of these images and edited them to really show the two images overlap.

From this i then wanted to explore the video with music in the back ground inspired by a 1920's style thats been remixed and something you could here within London clubs today.

Emcee Final Shoot

These are my final images based on our modern takes a character from 'Cabaret' influenced through club culture. I felt that my final images worked well and i was pleased with the outcome the hair was my strongest point and i loved the effect that i achieved having practised my wet finger waves i feel that this was successful. The makeup i further felt worked and portrayed my research although this not reminiscent of a contemporary 1920's look the finger wave and kiss curls influenced the contemporary 1920's twist on the design. Before the final Shoot i decided against using the hair tinsel when i looked at the overall look i felt that the tinsel was too much and distracted away from the hair structure something i feel was the strongest point to my design.

Having shot these images and through peer feedback some people found the image very comical and cartoon like, although the images are not attractive and comical i like this,  i feel it portrays more that New Berlin flamboyant, extravagant and crazy Club kid having been very inspired by the icons of club culture this look holds strong reference to Icons such as Leigh Bowery, Michale Algie and Amanda Lepore creating a look that pushes boundaries between male, female, colour, shape and texture having incorporated this into all element of my design including styling.

I am very pleased with the final images although i feel that if i were to re shoot this i would have made the kiss curls the same colour as the pink finger waves, although this blended well as they created a nice transition into the jacket.
