Colour

Within our summer project we were to explore the relation to colour in film and its meanings my blog can be found at for all the posts in exploration of colour;

''Colour can have political religious and cultural connotations, represent gender and as believed by Kandinsky, have emotional and physical effects on us…..improves our memory, influences buying decision and indicates meaning and tells stories.'' Robert Mills.

'There is no large or sufficiently powerful group which colour sustain a shared understanding of the meaning of colour across 'all of society'.Instead there are specialised interests of small groups or individuals, all with their very specific professional or personal interests.' Gunter Kress.

I feel after researching a lot into colour within this summer project i have gained a wider understanding of the meanings of colour not only in Western culture but also in Chinese culture the quotes above i feel explain the theory of colour witch is something that i was very interested in during my research.
This has allowed me to be more conscious when creating an opinion on either a moving image or a static image in either film, art and fashion and thinking about the nationality of the artist in relation to there colour choices for example in Chinese culture black is a symbol for heaven where as in the western culture black in a symbol of death and mourning hence why it is worn to funerals. Although now the Chinese culture have adopted our cultural traditions and it is common in this modern day for Chinese people to wear black to funerals only the traditional people wear white this further shows how colour is constantly changing its meaning and growing within modern society.
Within the research of colour it has allowed me to gain a wider understanding i can then further apply this in my work as i understand why multiple people will relate to your work differently depending on there culture and their own life experiences being concise within my colour choices can allow my work to portray more directly what i envisioned.
