Sally Bowels

Sally Bowel's Character within the Book 'Goodbye to Berlin' 1930 Christopher Isherwood Chapter 'Sally Bowels' is described as a 19 years old girl with big eyes and dark hair is comes across very flamboyant, naive, endearing and at some points selfish.

'…much stained by cigarette smoking and as dirty as a little girls. She was dark enough to be Fritz's sister. Her face was long and thin, powdered dead white. She had very large brown eyes which should have been darker, to match her hair and the pencil she used for her eyebrows.'

-Isherwood, C. (1989). Goodbye to Berlin. London: Minerva.

Within the Book Sally is portrayed as a young girl from England coming to Berlin for a new exciting life, the character is shown at times to be very broken and this comes through.
Christopher's relationship with Sally is very platonic they seam to be a huge support for one another, two english people coming to Berlin's exciting city to enjoy the sexual freedom and find there dreams. Christopher in many parts of this chapter brings sally back to reality and sally seams to be calm around his presents for example after her abortion she only wanted him there as she didn't want to have to talk to the nurses, she is at peace around him.
The end of the 'Sally Bowles' chapter is very sad although feel that it’s a very good ending for the chapter you see Chris needs sally as much as sally needs him. There relationship seams very strong and although they may end up in different countries they always have that bond.

'I am a Camera' 1951 John Van Druten broad way play was re made into a film in 1955 by John Collier  and directed by Henry Cornelius staring Julie Harris as Sally Bowels shows sally as a fair brunet english woman. Having Watched a little of this version i wasn't so keen on Julie's version of Sally to me she is very young and naive and always wanting excitement i felt Julie's version was a little strong the styling was very plain and didn't convay how i felt she was described in the book.

'Cabaret' 1972's version of Sally bowel played by Liza Minnelli, this is the most famous version of Sally Bowels i felt that in comparison of the original book Isherwood's description and compared to Julie Harris version i feel Liza portrayed how to me the book would be if brought to life the look was more or less exactly what Isherwood explained with the dark features and large eyes not only in styling and makeup but in the way Liza portrayed the attitude of the character.

'Cabaret' 1993 Directed by Sam Mendes at Donmar Warehouse in London's west end is again a version of the musical production 'Cabaret' portrayed Sally played by Jane Horrocks as a blonde English woman, this i found interesting depicting sally as the classic blonde english rose also the directing was very cleaver having Jane sit on an over size chair portrays that child like innocence that sally has but using strong deliberate movements shows Sally's personality similarly to the book.

There are many different Versions of Sally i feel that comparing a few to the book allows to you see how different directors have taken parts of Sally's personality or description from the original and developed it to how themselves imagine her to be.
