Sally development

When thinking about the scene i have chosen and the character i have chosen a word keeping coming back to me and that Contrast. The is a prominante contrast in the scene (act 2 scene 5) between life and the cabaret world. Within real life and the beginning half of the scene its dull, complicated, angry, sadness, Cliff wanting for sally to settle with him in America and have a baby, there is also a presents of Natzies the fact that we already know what happened in WW2 creates even more atmosphere towards Natzies. This in comparison to the stage were Sally sings in the second half it's glamorous, fun, exciting, she's in the spot light, the men love her, its glittery the fact in this scene is that Sally's naivety stops her from caring or seeing any badness in the cabaret world or in Berlin.

I really want to pick up on this contrast within the design of Sally. When thinking about my previous post i am inspired by the use of glitter and bringing in that tacky over the top idea this brought to mind, an hyper realists artist Marilyn Minter she explores within her painting the ideas of sexuality and uses erotic imagery. I feel that her painting are an example of the contrast i feel happens in this scene in 'Cabaret' the use of glitter and Dior heel in the image below with the dirt across the foot explores that two sided idea between the stage world and the real life that Sally struggles in taking something glamorous and idealised and focusing on the imperfections.

In relation to the design for Sally within this scene, my initial visuals of her would be that she would be tiered maybe bags under her eyes, gaunt from not eating and losing engergy from her pregnancy while still drinking but over the top of all of this be very made up. The makeup i imagine to be very layered creating this mask like feel, as its her first night back at the Kit Kat club i can visualise that she has made an effort more than she used to but for this to still feel tacky and cheaply done to relate it to the finical situation in Berlin at the time.
Although the 1930's historically correct makeup at the time was very thin arched brows and thin, natural eye liner with a contour to enhance and make the eyes look bigger along with red, raspberries or plum lips. I want to look at more that Berlin nightlife enhanced makeup style within the 30's inspired by performers at the time such as Anita berber.

Below is my initial face chart exploring my ideas before and after glitter is also shown to show the eye design. I chose to do the eye shadow in a this green colour as during my research this is a typically popular colour around this time i further thought that it makes reference to her nail colour also.

Wigs: Practical

During this practical we were taught how to prep the hair ready for a wig application and the effect wigs can have on people and characterisation. 

Wig Preperation and Application: 

Step 1:
Middle part the hair and french plait either side tight to the head making sure its comfortable for your client. If the hair is too short to do this pin curl the whole head of hair flat to the head.

Step 2:
Take either ends of the plait and wrap them around the head meeting the ends to just above the ear and pin into place.

Step 3:
Take the wig cap- and get the client to do a bunny ear motion hook the cap over there fingers and pull around and into place.
Then reapeat this techniques to apply the wig and style.

It was very interesting when trying the wigs on, although it was fun each wig you tried changed your whole appearance as people were trying on the wigs associations were made for example when i tried on a purple bob wig that was a little frizzy i was told i looked like a 'chavy mum of 10' compared to a blonde sleek bob wig and i looked like 'Marilyn' this showed me how using wigs can really change a person and their overall characters look very quickly without any makeup as shown in the images below.

- skin tone
-face shape
-over all appearance.

Group Discussion.

In todays lecture we were discussing in our groups the film 'Cabaret' the characters and the era. We discussed Sally's characteristics how she is very naive and had a 'don't care' attitude how this was portrayed through the large doe eye look using false lashes, within the book she is said to be 19 were as compared to the film the character feels and looks a lot older.
We explored the influence the styling had, as in the era of the 30's there was the great depression may people in berlin were poor and struggled in every day life. The styling of sally was very well put together her sharp bob didn't look like a woman of the times with no money it looked as though she had been to a hairdressers and was we'll kept. This was most likely due to the stylists aesthetics within the film, even though they may have considered the era and the lack of money the styling had to appeal to the audience of the musical film, most likely girls and women between ages 17 and 30. I personally imagine the styling to be a lot more tacky, the cabaret girls wouldn't have earned much money and would be wanting to appeal to a weather audience so for this they may dress 'cheap classy' to impress the customers.
Further we disscused what was most likely used in the creation of the looks within the cast. Wigs would have most likely been used as most of the styles were bob's the growth would be hard to control on natural hair and to create such a sharp style such as the one Sally wore on stage this would take a lot of time every day to get perfect. Also some of the Kit Kat girls were men to wigs would have had to been used here too.
It was interesting listening to the variations of styling people would chose or didn't like on various characters, personal influence can effect a design and i feel that i want to stay away from the inspirations of the styling within the film of Sally and create my own interpretation of the character.

Otto Dix: Practical

In todays lesson we were looking at the artist Otto Dix's oil painting the brush strokes he uses are very purposeful and direct, he dose not blend the colours but allows them to sit on top of one another. Within this practical we were to explore this technique on the face using Supra Colour pallet we were to explore re creating one of his paintings. 

I enjoyed this practical as i used to do fine art and my painting style is very similar creating visible brush strokes to allow the colour to sit and create shape. I found it hard painting around the features as usually when painting you paint the eye or the nose i felt as the colours weren't the same in the eye area it made the over all effect look quite comical. I found the supra colour good to work with and preferred this to the aqua colour paints i felt i could get a better depth in colour build up.

Sally Bowels: Desire

The word i have chosen for my Scene is Desire, i feel that in this scene Sally desires her career she wants to get were she imagines herself to be no matter whom she affects and in this case its Cliff.

      DESIRE, NEED, HUNGER, WISH, WANT, ASPIRATION, SELF- INDULGENCE.

When i think of this word i think of needing a hunger for something, then i think of red and purples a strong and vibrant colour thats purposeful. I think of the eye to be exaggerated and large to have that shiny quality to them to symbolise the greed within Sally to not think of others.The glitter element within the images i have collected below i feel symbolises Desire the glittery glamorous life that sally wishes for.

The hair i can imagine to be full and very well done as though she has sat there perfecting her style, Desire to me in hair would be full, glossy, long and wavy bouncy curls but translating this into a 1930's style i have collected a few images i feel symbolise desire. Again i can imagine the hair to have a shiny quality in the 1930's head dresses were popular this could be very elaborate.

Although the images i have chosen are very well styled and look very glamours i feel these images Sally would look up to but dose not have the money to create her self for example the diamond head dress so would improvise with what she could get. On sally it would look a lot more rough and thrown together.
